My step by step process of becoming rich
Liebster award, million dollar blog, million dollar blog Australia, retirement options

I found out today at this million dollar blog was nominated for a Liebster Award by a fellow personal finance blogger! Awesome!! Thanks Dee over at Color-Me-Frugal! But what’s a Liebster Award?

What’s a Liebster Award? (sounds better when read in a German accent)

I did a little research and it appears to be a blogging community-based award given by 1 blogger to 5 others, giving them kudos for their blog. The catch? The blogs are meant to have less than 200 followers, in other words, it should be a relatively new blog. I certainly fit within that category. More than anything, I’m just glad to know that another blogger out there thinks highly enough of my blog and it’s content to give me an award.

How does the Liebster Award work?

The blogger that nominates you gives you 10 questions to repost on your blog and answer (see my Q&A below). At the same time, I have to nominate 5 other newish blogs that I love to follow and get them to answer 10 new questions that I pose for them.

My answers for Dee

Here are the questions that were posed by Dee over at color-me-frugal.com

1) If someone gave you a million dollars, what would you do with it?
It’s a pretty easy one for a million dollar blogger, I’d keep it a secret from Mrs Ikonz and invest it in building some more passive income, probably 2 investment properties with a low LVR, making them cashflow positive. I’d also put a bit of it towards paying down some of the debt on my current investment properties and margin loan, just to ease the debt pressure a little bit. NB: I wouldn’t completely pay down the debt; I treat my debt just like a business would, it’s not necessarily a bad thing, it’s done to grow my revenue.

2) What is your favorite thing about blogging?
I have two favourite things about blogging:
1. Tracking my net worth every month is a fantastic process, knowing how much closer I am to my early retirement and my $10m goal.
2. Building relationships with other bloggers. It’s amazing how quickly you can form relationships in a virtual community.

3) When cooking, are you more likely to follow a recipe or make it up as you go along?
I’m not sure you need a recipe for making boiled eggs…

4) Are you a cat person or a dog person or neither or both, and why?
A cat person. I’ve always had cats since I was a kid, I just love that they tend to look after themselves and act like humans.

5) If you could go back in time and give yourself advice, what advice would you give?
Look at your retirement options early and start regular investing as early as possible, building online savings. Assets needed to retire are built over the long term, you get rich slow, not quick. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.
I would have not wasted a huge amount of money on awesome gadgets.

I’d also tell myself to invest in Apple, Google and try to get into this new-fangled type of investing called startups, like Paypal and eBay. :)

6) On that glorious day when you achieve your big financial goals (be it debt payoff, reaching financial independence, or something else), how will you celebrate?
Our goal is early retirement. ON the day we retire, Mrs Ikonz and I are going to book a round-the-world business class trip. We love to travel, so we want to do it in style as our lifestyle in retirement is set to be even better than now.

7) How do you think your financial situation will compare to that of your parents? Do you think you will be better or worse off than them one day?
Our situation will definitely be better than our parents. My folks concentrated on getting rid of debt and making sure me and my siblings wanted for nothing, especially education.

I always kick myself though, I wish my parents had made some investments back in the day in some of the bank stocks like Commonwealth Bank, BHP etc, simply to make the most of “time in the market” and compounding.

8) Are you a glass half full or half empty kind of person?
A glass half full – of red cordial or Rockstar.

9) What is your favorite season, and why?
I love Spring – not too hot, not too cold. I think I would love Winter the most if it snowed in Sydney.

10) If you could have dinner with any three people, living or dead, who would you choose?
Mark Cuban – I love his entrepreneurial nature and fun-loving, no crap attitude. Go the Mavs!
Sebastian Vettel – I’m a big F1 fan and I’ve loved watching him race for Redbull. I love his sense of humour and attitude to racing
Matt Damon – He seems like a pretty cool, down to earth kinda guy.

Who do I nominate?

Since starting my blog, I’ve started following more and more personal finance blogs and personal growth blogs. So here is a list of my five favourite bloggers that I follow regularly that have great content and really resonate with me.

Their sites are older than mine and I’m not sure how many regular visitors they have, but they certainly aren’t mega-blogs like others.

1. Heather at 20somethingsyndrome.com
2. Ryan at Impersonalfinance.com
3. Connie at SavvyWithSaving.com
4. Mel at BrokeGirlRich.com
5. Buck at Bucking-The-Trend.com

Thanks for the nomination brother! I honestly appreciate it, and totally dig your site, so please keep it up man.

In order to avoid some redundancy, let’s tackle these questions!

    1. Where would you go on a first date if you were on a tight budget?

The backseat of a car. Awww yeah. No, I’m kidding. Probably a small pizza place with good drink specials.

    2. What would you spend your last $10 on?

    My wife and dogs.

    3. How old were you when you first started your journey to financial freedom?

26 on the journey to freedom. 17 on the path to indentured servitude.

    4. What do your family/friends think about your blog and your financial journey?

My friends aren’t aware of the blog. My wife is supportive. Of the journey, I keep my finances to myself, but they are “impressed” with my progress, although some of them still refuse my advice.

    5. What do you do for fun when not blogging?

    Play the banjo and run.

    6. Favourite destination for a holiday and how you would get there?

Chicago by car, Paris by airplane.

    7. Favourite pair of Nikes?

Not Nikes, Adidas Sambas. Loved those things when I was a kid.

    8. What would you count as blogging success?

Knowing I helped people… that and $5500 annually.

    9. Do you wear a watch or check the time on your iPhone/smartphone?

    Smartphone regularly.

    10. The biggest win you’ve had in life?

Outside of the typical answers, I’m going to say finding a house for $50k and getting a job with an awesome company. Both were kind of right place/ right time kinds of things.

    Thanks again pal!

Back of the car’s cheaper than a hotel! Win!
House for $50k?? How the hell did you score that?

      • Ryan @ Impersonal Finance
        on 26/03/2014

Ha! Definitely cheaper than a hotel! As for the house, it was a foreclosure that needed a lot of work, so we were really lucky. The bank actually sold it and took around a $30k haircut, and in less than two years we’ve been able to double our equity, so it really worked out well. We were lucky.

$50k in Australia might buy you a small garden shed… :)

Thanks for the nomination. I’ve been on hiatus this week with finishing up school but I’m going to be a busy beaver this weekend. That’s awesome that you mentioned Mark Cuban. I actually live in Dallas and am going to a Mav’s game tonight! :)

Massive Mark Cuban fan. Just love his no bullshit attitude. He seems to simply enjoy living his life his way.

Hope the Mavs get a win!

Great mix of questions! Enough about blogging that we get to know their blogging style, enough about life to give them a personality.
